How fitScore Works

A short explanation of how frugal.fit scores grocery foods by protein value and macro efficiency.

fitScore is a quick way to compare grocery foods when protein value matters. It rewards products that give you more protein for your money while also staying efficient on calories.

The two main signals

fitScore starts with two questions:

  • How many grams of protein do you get per dollar?
  • How much protein do you get for every 100 calories?

Protein per dollar captures budget value. Protein per 100 calories captures macro efficiency. A product has to do well on both to rank near the top.

Why both signals matter

A food can look cheap but require a lot of calories to get meaningful protein. Another food can be very lean but too expensive to be a practical everyday choice.

fitScore balances those tradeoffs so the highest-ranked products are not just cheap, and not just lean. They are strong protein buys overall.

How to read the score

Higher fitScores mean stronger protein value. The score is best used for quick comparison: scan the score first, then check the product details, price, serving size, and nutrition facts before buying.
